About This Test

Who Should Get This Test

Chromosome Analysis (Karyotype), Blood; Lupus Anticoagulant Panel; Cardiolipin Antibodies Panel IgA, IgG & IgM; Phospholipid Antibodies Panel IgG & IgM; Beta 2 Glycoprotein 1 Panel IgA, IgG & IgM.

How to Prepare

  • Collect 5 mL whole blood in 2 Green Top (Sodium Heparin) tubes each from husband and wife.
  • Ship Green Top tubes refrigerated immediately and do not freeze; specimen must reach lab within 24 hours.
  • Collect 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube and mix thoroughly by inversion.
  • Transport Blue Top tube to lab within 4 hours; if this is not possible, prepare platelet-poor plasma within 1 hour by centrifugation at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, repeat centrifugation, transfer supernatant to a clean plastic vial, and freeze immediately.
  • Collect 4 mL serum from 2 SSTs and ship refrigerated or frozen.
  • Ensure Chromosome and FISH Analysis Requisition Form (Form 17) and Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) are duly filled.

Understanding Your Results

Results should be interpreted by a specialist. Abnormal karyotype or positive antiphospholipid antibodies may guide the need for reproductive counselling, preimplantation genetic testing, or anticoagulation strategies.
📊

46,XX or 46,XY; no major chromosomal abnormality detected

📊

May show translocations, inversions, deletions/duplications, or aneuploidy; genetic counselling recommended

📊

May support antiphospholipid syndrome when clinical criteria are met

📊

Reduce the likelihood of antiphospholipid syndrome but do not exclude all causes

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

Consult your gynaecologist or reproductive medicine specialist if any result is abnormal, if you have recurrent miscarriages, or if you need help planning further fertility treatment.

Limitations

  • Karyotype cannot detect single-gene mutations or microdeletions below the resolution of standard cytogenetic analysis
  • Positive antiphospholipid antibody results require clinical correlation and may need repeat testing as per guidelines
  • Negative results do not rule out all causes of infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss

Risks & Considerations

  • Mild pain or bruising at venipuncture site
  • Lightheadedness during blood draw
  • Haematoma at collection site

Interfering Factors

  • Heparin therapy within 1 day prior to sample collection
  • Oral anticoagulants within 7 days prior to sample collection
  • Improper sample transport or temperature deviations
  • Clotted, haemolysed, or insufficient samples
