Overview
The purpose of this test is to diagnose the underlying cause of kidney dysfunction, assess the severity of kidney damage, guide treatment decisions, and monitor disease progression. It is often recommended when non-invasive tests (urine, blood) suggest significant renal pathology, or when a specific diagnosis is needed for conditions like nephrotic syndrome, acute kidney injury, or chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology.

Sample Collection
Inform your doctor about all medications, especially blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel). You may be asked to stop them temporarily. Fasting is not required. A doctor's prescription is mandatory for this test.
Method: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy
Laboratory Analysis
You will lie on your stomach or side. The skin is cleaned and numbed with local anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, a thin needle is inserted through the skin into the kidney to obtain small tissue cores. You may feel pressure but not sharp pain. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes.
Report Delivery
You will be observed for several hours to monitor for bleeding. Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least 24-48 hours. Drink plenty of water to help flush out any blood. Report any severe pain, fever, or blood in urine to your doctor immediately.
Timeline: Preliminary light microscopy report may be available in 3-5 days. Final report including IF and EM may take up to 21 days.

Understanding Your Results
Minimal Change Disease
IgA Nephropathy
Membranous Nephropathy
Lupus Nephritis
Consult a nephrologist if you experience symptoms such as swelling, blood in urine, foamy urine, fatigue, or changes in urination. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent progression to end-stage renal disease.
