Sample Collection
No special preparation is required. Inform your physician about any current antibiotic use or ear drops being used. Avoid cleaning the ear canal with cotton swabs or antiseptic solutions prior to sample collection.
Method: Swab collection from ear canal by trained phlebotomist or physician
Laboratory Analysis
A trained healthcare professional will gently insert a sterile swab into the ear canal to collect the discharge or surface sample. The swab is then placed into a special Aerobic Transport Medium vial. The affected ear (left or right) must be specified on the vial and the test request form.
Report Delivery
The sample is shipped refrigerated to the laboratory. No specific post-collection care is needed. You may resume normal activities immediately. Avoid inserting anything into the ear until advised by your physician.

How to Prepare

Single organism identified with sensitivity
A specific bacterial pathogen has been identified. Antibiotic sensitivity results indicate which antibiotics will be effective for treatment.
Multiple organisms identified
Polymicrobial infection detected. Treatment should be guided by the sensitivity pattern of the predominant pathogen. Clinical correlation recommended.
Resistant organism detected
The identified organism shows resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Treatment should be adjusted based on the sensitivity report to avoid treatment failure.
Commensal flora only
Only normal ear flora was isolated. This typically does not indicate active infection. Clinical assessment is recommended.
Consult your doctor or ENT specialist if you experience persistent ear pain, discharge from the ear, hearing loss, fever, dizziness, or if your ear infection does not improve after a course of antibiotics. Recurrent ear infections also warrant medical evaluation and culture testing.
Limitations
