Patient Instructions

1
Before the Test:12 hours overnight fasting is recommended. Inform the laboratory about any antiviral medicines or immunosuppressive therapy.
2
During the Test:A phlebotomist or lab professional collects the required sample aseptically. For amniotic fluid, the procedure is performed under medical supervision after 21 weeks of pregnancy.

Understanding Your Results

The CMV qualitative PCR result is reported as Detected or Not Detected.
📊

Detected

Cytomegalovirus DNA is present, indicating active or recent CMV infection. Clinical correlation is needed.

📊

Not Detected

Cytomegalovirus DNA was not found in the sample. A negative result does not completely rule out infection if sample timing or site is inadequate.

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

Consult a doctor if you have symptoms of CMV infection, have a weakened immune system, are pregnant with suspected fetal CMV, or have an abnormal PCR result.

Limitations

  • Qualitative PCR detects presence or absence but does not quantify viral load.
  • A negative result does not completely rule out CMV infection if sample timing or site is not optimal.
  • Test results should be interpreted with clinical findings and other laboratory tests.

Risks & Considerations

  • Mild pain or bruising at venipuncture site
  • No significant risk for urine or saliva collection
  • Amniotic fluid collection should be done by an experienced clinician under ultrasound guidance

Interfering Factors

  • Improper sample collection or delayed separation of plasma/serum may cause nucleic acid degradation.
  • Contamination during collection can lead to false-positive results.
  • Recent antiviral therapy may reduce viral load and affect detection.
