Overview
This profile is intended to screen for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR, screen for HBsAg and HIV 1 & 2 antibodies, and evaluate kidney function, iron status, complete blood counts, NLR and CRP in dialysis patients. It supports early detection of COVID-19 and assessment of infection/inflammation-related changes.

About This Test
Who Should Get This Test
This profile is intended to screen for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR, screen for HBsAg and HIV 1 & 2 antibodies, and evaluate kidney function, iron status, complete blood counts, NLR and CRP in dialysis patients. It supports early detection of COVID-19 and assessment of infection/inflammation-related changes.
How to Prepare
- Schedule sample collection before 12 noon after overnight fasting if possible.
- Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours before collection.
- Complete Covid-19 Clinical Information Form (Form 44)/SRF ID and HIV consent Form 10 & 10A.
- Collect blood in SST and EDTA tubes and swabs in VTM using aseptic technique.
- Label all specimens correctly and transport refrigerated at 2–8°C; do not freeze.

- Improperly labelled or unlabelled samples
- Insufficient sample volume
- Leaking or broken tubes
- Missing mandatory consent/SRF forms
Understanding Your Results
SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Not Detected
No viral RNA detected in the tested respiratory sample. False negatives can occur if sample is inadequate or infection is early.
SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Detected
Confirms presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Isolate and follow national/ICMR guidelines.
HBsAg / HIV 1 & 2 antibodies Non-reactive
No laboratory evidence of current infection. Consider window period and risk factors.
Elevated creatinine or urea
May reflect underlying kidney dysfunction; interpret in relation to dialysis status.
Low haemoglobin or iron parameters
May indicate anaemia or iron deficiency; dialysis patients often have altered iron metabolism.
Elevated CRP or NLR
Suggests inflammation or possible infection; not specific to COVID-19.
Contact your nephrologist or physician if you develop fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, body ache, loss of taste or smell, or if any result is reported abnormal.
Limitations
- ⚠A negative SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR does not completely exclude COVID-19; clinical correlation is needed.
- ⚠HBsAg and HIV antibody tests may be negative during the window period.
- ⚠CRP and NLR are nonspecific and can be elevated in many inflammatory conditions.
- ⚠Reference ranges in dialysis patients may differ from the general population.
- ⚠This profile is a screening tool and does not replace clinical judgement.
Risks & Considerations
- ●Mild pain or bruising at the venipuncture site
- ●Transient discomfort during nasal/throat swab collection
- ●Rarely, lightheadedness
Interfering Factors
- ●Iron supplements within 24 hours before collection may alter iron study results.
- ●Non-fasting sample may affect some parameters; overnight fasting is preferred.
- ●Recent blood transfusion can change CBC and iron study values.
- ●Improper or delayed swab collection may reduce RT-PCR sensitivity.
- ●Haemolysis or lipaemia may interfere with spectrophotometric assays.
- ●Freezing of samples is not acceptable and may affect results.
