Sample Collection
Complete the mandatory Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15), HIV testing consent and pre-test counselling forms (Form 10 & 10A). Overnight fasting and sampling before 12 noon are preferred. Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours before collection.
Method: Venipuncture under aseptic conditions
Laboratory Analysis
A trained phlebotomist will draw blood from a vein into SST, grey-top, lavender-top and blue-top tubes. The blue-top citrate tube must be filled to the appropriate mark and mixed thoroughly by inversion immediately after collection.
Report Delivery
Samples are transported to the laboratory at specified temperatures. If citrate whole blood cannot reach the lab within 4 hours, platelet-poor plasma must be prepared within 1 hour and frozen immediately. You may resume normal activities after sample collection unless advised otherwise.

How to Prepare
- Collect 6 mL serum in 3 SSTs; ship refrigerated or frozen.
- Collect 2 mL plasma in 1 grey-top sodium fluoride tube; ship refrigerated or frozen.
- Collect 4 mL whole blood in 1 lavender-top EDTA tube; ship refrigerated, do not freeze.
- Collect 3 mL whole blood in 1 blue-top sodium citrate tube; mix thoroughly by inversion; transport to lab within 4 hours.
- If transport within 4 hours is not possible for citrate sample, prepare platelet-poor plasma within 1 hour by double centrifugation and freeze immediately; do not thaw.
