Sample Collection
No special preparation such as fasting is required before this test. Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
A trained phlebotomist will collect approximately 2 mL of blood from a vein in your arm using standard venipuncture technique. The blood is drawn into a Serum Separator Tube (SST). The procedure typically takes less than 5 minutes and involves minimal discomfort.
Report Delivery
After blood collection, pressure will be applied to the puncture site with a cotton ball or bandage. You may resume normal activities immediately. Mild bruising at the site is common and resolves on its own within a few days.

How to Prepare

"HSV-1 infection is extremely common globally, with seroprevalence rates exceeding 60 percent in many populations. The HSV-1 IgG test is valuable for determining past exposure and immune status. This is particularly important in pregnant women who have not been previously exposed, as primary HSV-1 infection during pregnancy can pose risks to the newborn. A positive IgG result indicates prior exposure and some degree of immunity, while a significant rise in IgG titers between paired samples may suggest recent infection or reactivation. Patients with recurrent oral lesions should discuss suppressive therapy options with their physician."

Understanding Your Results
Negative (< 0.9 Index)
No detectable HSV-1 IgG antibodies. This suggests no prior exposure to HSV-1. However, if exposure was very recent (within the past 2 to 12 weeks), antibodies may not have developed yet, and repeat testing is recommended.
Equivocal (0.9 - 1.1 Index)
Borderline result. Antibody levels are in an indeterminate range. Repeat testing after 2 to 4 weeks is recommended to confirm the result.
Positive (> 1.1 Index)
HSV-1 IgG antibodies detected. This indicates prior exposure to Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. The individual has been infected with HSV-1 at some point in their lifetime. Consult your physician for further evaluation and management.
Significant Rise in IgG (Paired Samples)
A four-fold or greater rise in IgG titers between acute and convalescent serum samples suggests recent primary infection or reactivation of HSV-1. Clinical correlation is essential.
Consult your physician if you experience recurrent cold sores or fever blisters, if your test result is positive and you are planning a pregnancy or are currently pregnant, if you have an equivocal result and need guidance on retesting, if you are immunocompromised and receive a positive result, or if you have any concerns about HSV-1 transmission to a partner or newborn.
Limitations
- ⚠This test detects IgG antibodies and cannot distinguish between active and latent infection
- ⚠Cannot determine the site of infection (oral vs genital) based solely on serology
- ⚠Equivocal results require repeat testing after 2 to 4 weeks for confirmation
- ⚠A negative result does not completely rule out very recent infection before seroconversion
- ⚠Serological tests cannot determine the exact time of infection
