Overview
The purpose of a Lipid Profile Basic Test is to evaluate the levels of different types of cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. This test is used to screen for dyslipidemia (abnormal lipid levels), assess the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke, and to monitor the effectiveness of lipid-lowering treatments including lifestyle changes and medications such as statins. By measuring Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL Cholesterol (good cholesterol), LDL Cholesterol (bad cholesterol), VLDL Cholesterol, and Non-HDL Cholesterol, physicians can build a comprehensive picture of a patient's cardiovascular risk profile. Prevention of ischemic cardiovascular events is key, and this test forms a cornerstone of routine cardiac health screening.

Sample Collection
Minimum 12 hours of overnight fasting is mandatory before sample collection. Water is permitted during the fasting period. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test. Continue taking prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your physician. Inform the phlebotomist about any medications or supplements you are currently taking.
Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
A trained phlebotomist will collect approximately 3 mL of blood from a vein in your arm (venipuncture) using a sterile needle and a Serum Separator Tube (SST). The procedure typically takes less than 5 minutes. You may feel a slight prick when the needle is inserted. Apply pressure to the puncture site after the blood draw.
Report Delivery
After sample collection, apply gentle pressure to the puncture site with a cotton ball or gauze for 3–5 minutes. A small bruise may develop at the site, which is normal and will resolve within a few days. You may resume normal activities and eat after the blood draw. Reports will be delivered via online portal, email, or WhatsApp.
Timeline: Same day to 24 hours from sample collection

Doctor's Notes
Reviewed by Dr Ramarao Paidisetty — MBBS, MD (Biochemistry) · Reg. No. 21504
"A Lipid Profile Basic Test is one of the most important screening tools I use to evaluate a patient's cardiovascular risk. Elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, combined with low HDL, significantly increase the likelihood of atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. Many patients with dangerously high cholesterol levels have no symptoms at all, making routine screening essential. I recommend this test for all adults over 30, or earlier if there is a family history of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, or smoking. Early detection allows for timely lifestyle modifications and, when necessary, pharmacological intervention with statins or other lipid-lowering agents to prevent ischemic cardiovascular events. Prevention through regular monitoring is far more effective and less costly than treating a heart attack or stroke after it occurs."

Understanding Your Results
Total Cholesterol
LDL Cholesterol
HDL Cholesterol
Triglycerides
VLDL Cholesterol
Non-HDL Cholesterol
Consult a cardiologist or your physician if your lipid profile results show elevated LDL cholesterol (>160 mg/dL), low HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dL for men or <50 mg/dL for women), high triglycerides (>200 mg/dL), or elevated total cholesterol (≥240 mg/dL). Additionally, seek medical advice if you experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness or weakness in your extremities, or yellowish patches around your eyes (xanthelasma). If you have a family history of premature heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, or are a smoker, regular lipid screening and physician consultation are strongly recommended.
Limitations
- ⚠This test measures lipid levels at a single point in time; levels may fluctuate due to diet, stress, and other factors
- ⚠Fasting is required for accurate triglyceride and LDL calculation; non-fasting samples may yield less reliable results
- ⚠VLDL is a calculated value and not directly measured
- ⚠This basic panel does not include advanced lipid sub-fractionation or Apo B/A1 ratio testing
- ⚠Results should always be interpreted in the context of other cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, blood sugar, family history, and smoking status
Risks & Considerations
- ●Minor bruising or swelling at the puncture site
- ●Slight pain or discomfort during needle insertion
- ●Very rare: dizziness or lightheadedness during or after blood draw
- ●Extremely rare: infection at the puncture site
Interfering Factors
- ●Non-fasting state or recent high-fat meal can significantly elevate triglycerides and total cholesterol
- ●Grossly hemolysed blood samples are not acceptable and may affect accuracy
- ●Certain medications including beta-blockers, thiazide diuretics, oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, and retinoids can alter lipid levels
- ●Acute illness, infection, or recent surgery may temporarily lower cholesterol levels
- ●Alcohol consumption within 24 hours of the test may affect triglyceride levels
- ●Pregnancy can significantly alter lipid levels
