Yes (8 hours)
Method
Electromechanical Clot Detection, Photo-optical Clot Detection
Step 1

Sample Collection

Overnight fasting is preferred. Ensure duly filled coagulation Requisition form (Form 15) is mandatory. Discontinue Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling with prior consent from the treating physician.

Method: Venipuncture

Step 2

Laboratory Analysis

A qualified phlebotomist will collect 6 mL of whole blood via venipuncture into 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes. Tubes must be mixed thoroughly by inversion.

Step 3

Report Delivery

Transport the sample to the lab within 4 hours. If delayed, prepare Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP) by centrifuging at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, transferring supernatant, centrifuging again, and freezing immediately. Ship frozen without thawing.

Timeline: Reports available next day if sample is received by 11 am on Thursday.

Patient Instructions

1
Before the Test:Follow pre-test instructions: fast overnight, discontinue anticoagulants as advised, and complete Form 15.

Understanding Your Results

Interpretation of the Menorrhagia Screen Test involves evaluating coagulation parameters to identify deficiencies or abnormalities. Results should be correlated with clinical symptoms and other diagnostic findings by a healthcare professional.
Elevated PT or APTT may indicate coagulation factor deficiencies or inhibitors
Low Factor VIII or IX levels suggest specific bleeding disorders like hemophilia
Normal results may point to non-hematological causes of menorrhagia
Consult a specialist for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning
⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

Consult a doctor if test results show abnormalities, if symptoms persist after treatment, or if you experience severe bleeding, dizziness, or signs of anemia. Immediate medical attention is advised for heavy bleeding that soaks through pads hourly.

Limitations

  • May not detect all causes of menorrhagia, such as structural abnormalities
  • Results can be influenced by recent medications or underlying conditions
  • Requires proper sample handling to avoid false results

Risks & Considerations

  • Minor bruising at puncture site
  • Rare chance of infection or dizziness

Interfering Factors

  • Heparin therapy (discontinue for 1 day prior with physician consent)
  • Oral anticoagulants (discontinue for 7 days prior with physician consent)
  • Recent blood transfusions
  • Liver disease or vitamin K deficiency
  • Dehydration or improper sample collection
