Who Should Get This Test
This is a sensitive PCR assay for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and Non Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM). If MTB Complex is positive, the test includes drug sensitivity for Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol & Pyrazinamide.
How to Prepare
- Collect sputum and urine first morning samples ideally on 3 consecutive days.
- Use sterile screw-capped containers for sputum, urine, body fluids, aspirates, menstrual blood, and culture isolates.
- Submit fresh tissue biopsies in sterile normal saline or formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue block.
- Collect 3 mL whole blood/bone marrow in Lavender Top (EDTA) or Yellow Top (ACD) tube.
- Label all samples with patient details and collection time.
- Transport refrigerated; do not freeze.

MTB Complex DNA Detected
Indicates presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex; physician may start or adjust anti-tuberculosis treatment.
NTM DNA Detected
Indicates Non Tuberculous Mycobacteria; clinical significance depends on species and clinical context.
Not Detected
No MTB complex or NTM DNA detected in the sample; tuberculosis is less likely but not completely excluded.
Invalid/Inconclusive
Poor sample quality or PCR inhibition; repeat testing may be needed.
Consult a physician immediately if the test is positive, or if symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, night sweats, weight loss, or coughing up blood persist.
Limitations
- ⚠PCR detects nucleic acid and may not replace culture for organism viability or complete drug susceptibility
