"This panel is helpful when a low vitamin B12 level is discovered and the doctor needs to determine whether pernicious anemia is the underlying cause. A positive intrinsic factor antibody result strongly supports the diagnosis, but a negative result does not rule it out. Clinical judgment and additional investigations such as a complete blood count and peripheral smear are necessary before starting treatment."

Understanding Your Results

A positive intrinsic factor antibody is strongly associated with pernicious anemia but may be absent in some patients.
