Sample Collection
Specimen should be collected just before the next dose is due at steady state. A duly filled Test Send Out Consent Form (Form 35) is mandatory. No fasting required, but timing relative to dose is critical.
Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
Standard venipuncture procedure to collect 2 mL blood in a Red Top (no additive) tube.
Report Delivery
Ship refrigerated. Do not freeze. Ensure sample stability: room temperature for 8 hours, refrigerator for 1 week.
Timeline: Reports available after 2-3 weeks from sample receipt.

Understanding Your Results
Therapeutic range; drug levels are within effective limits for arrhythmia control.
Range: Procainamide 4-10 µg/mL and NAPA 10-20 µg/mL
Potential toxicity; risk of adverse effects like nausea, dizziness, or cardiac issues. Dose adjustment may be needed.
Range: Procainamide >10 µg/mL or NAPA >20 µg/mL
Subtherapeutic levels; drug may be ineffective. Consider dose increase or compliance check.
Range: Procainamide <4 µg/mL or NAPA <10 µg/mL
If you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, confusion, seizures, low blood pressure, or irregular heartbeat while on Procainamide, consult your doctor immediately. Also, consult for dose adjustments based on test results.
Limitations
- ⚠Measures total drug levels, not free or protein-bound fractions
- ⚠Does not differentiate between parent drug and metabolite in terms of activity
- ⚠Reference ranges may vary based on laboratory methods
Risks & Considerations
- ●Minor bruising or pain at the blood draw site
- ●Rare risk of infection or dizziness
- ●No significant risks associated with the test itself
Interfering Factors
- ●Use of SST gel barrier tubes may affect results
- ●Hemolyzed or lipemic samples
- ●Concurrent medications that alter Procainamide metabolism
- ●Non-steady state sampling timing
