Sample Collection

How to Prepare
- Plasma must be collected in a lavender top EDTA tube
- CSF and amniotic fluid must be collected in a sterile screw capped container
- Nasopharyngeal swab should be placed in appropriate viral transport medium
- All samples must be labelled with patient name, date of collection, and clinical history

Understanding Your Results
Detected
Rubella virus RNA is present. Likely active or recent rubella infection. Clinical correlation is recommended, especially in pregnancy.
Not Detected
No rubella virus RNA was detected in the tested sample. A negative result does not exclude infection if the sample was collected outside the viral shedding window.
Invalid / Indeterminate
The test could not yield a reliable result. Repeat testing on a fresh sample is recommended.
If rubella is suspected during pregnancy, if the PCR result is positive, or if a newborn has signs of congenital rubella infection, consult a gynaecologist or infectious disease specialist immediately. Positive rubella results should also be notified to public health authorities as per local regulations.
Limitations
- ⚠PCR detects viral RNA and does not indicate immunity status
- ⚠A negative PCR result does not completely rule out rubella infection if the sample was not collected at the optimal time
- ⚠This test does not differentiate between wild-type rubella virus and vaccine-strain RNA unless additional genotyping is performed
- ⚠Clinical interpretation should be done along with rubella serology and physical examination
