Overview
To confirm active SARS-CoV-2 infection by detecting viral RNA and to assess haematological and inflammatory parameters, including CBC, NLR, and CRP, which are useful for evaluating the patient's immune-inflammatory status, severity of illness, and risk of progression to severe COVID-19.

- ICD Code
- U07.1
- Price
- ₹4,446
- Sample Type
- Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal Swabs/ET secretions/ BAL /Sputum in VTM, Serum, Whole Blood

- Method
- Real Time RT-PCR, Immunoturbidimetry, Electrical Impedance, VCS
Sample Collection
Overnight fasting is preferred, but not mandatory for emergency diagnosis. The duly filled Covid-19 Clinical Information Form (Form 44) / SRF ID as mandated by GOI is mandatory. Inform your healthcare provider about all symptoms, medications, and exposure history.
Method: Nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab and blood collection by venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
A nasal or throat swab will be collected by a trained professional. Blood samples will be taken from a vein in the arm. Minor discomfort may occur during sample collection.
Report Delivery
You may resume normal activities after the sample collection. No specific precautions are required unless advised by your healthcare provider.

Test Parameters & Specifications
Sample Stability
- Unlabelled or mislabelled specimen
- Improper or inadequate viral transport medium
- Clotted or haemolysed blood sample
- Insufficient sample volume
- Missing mandatory Covid-19 Clinical Information Form (Form 44) / SRF ID
Understanding Your Results
SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Detected
Active SARS-CoV-2 infection is likely; patient should follow isolation protocols and clinical monitoring as per guidelines.
SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Not Detected
No SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in this sample; however, if clinical suspicion remains high, repeat testing may be considered.
Elevated CRP
Indicates systemic inflammation; commonly elevated in COVID-19 and can help assess severity or progression.
Elevated NLR
Suggests a pro-inflammatory state and may correlate with higher disease severity in COVID-19 patients.
Abnormal CBC parameters
Lymphopenia, leucopenia, or thrombocytopenia are frequently observed in COVID-19 and require clinical correlation.
Contact your healthcare provider if you have fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of smell or taste, fatigue, body aches, or known COVID-19 exposure. Seek emergency medical attention for chest pain, confusion, bluish lips or face, or difficulty breathing.
Limitations
- ⚠A negative RT-PCR result does not completely exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially if the sample was collected very early or very late in the illness
- ⚠Detection of viral RNA by RT-PCR does not always indicate the presence of viable infectious virus
- ⚠False-negative results may occur due to sampling variation or low viral load
- ⚠NLR and CRP are non-specific markers and should be interpreted in the clinical context
- ⚠Reference ranges vary by age, sex, laboratory, and analytical method
Risks & Considerations
- ●Mild discomfort or gagging during nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab collection
- ●Slight pain, bruising, or redness at the venipuncture site
- ●Rare risk of bleeding or infection at the blood collection site
Interfering Factors
- ●Improper or inadequate sample collection may lead to false-negative RT-PCR results
- ●Haemolysed serum sample may interfere with CRP measurement
- ●Delayed transport or inappropriate storage conditions can reduce viral RNA stability
- ●Recent blood transfusion may affect haematological parameters
- ●Concurrent bacterial infection or other inflammatory conditions may elevate CRP and NLR
