The purpose of this qualitative PCR test is to confirm the presence or absence of Parvovirus B19 DNA in a clinical specimen. PCR is especially useful in early infection before antibodies appear, in immunocompromised patients who may not mount an antibody response, and in pregnancy when a rapid, sensitive diagnosis is needed to guide monitoring and treatment. Because the test is qualitative, it reports whether the virus is detected or not detected rather than providing a viral count.

Before the Test:No special preparation or fasting is required. Please inform your doctor if you are pregnant, have a blood disorder, are immunocompromised, or have had a recent blood transfusion.

During the Test:A trained phlebotomist will withdraw a small amount of venous blood into an EDTA tube. If spinal fluid is required, it will be collected by a healthcare professional using a sterile technique.

After the Test:After a blood draw, you may return to your normal routine. If you had a lumbar puncture, your doctor will provide aftercare instructions.

How to Prepare

  • No special preparation or fasting is required
  • Submit 3 mL (2 mL minimum) whole blood in a Lavender Top (EDTA) tube
  • If CSF is required, collect 3 mL (2 mL minimum) in a sterile screw-capped container
  • Transport the sample refrigerated; do not freeze
  • Label the sample properly with patient identification and request details

"A positive Parvovirus B19 PCR result in pregnancy should trigger urgent obstetric evaluation, including fetal ultrasound and Doppler studies. In immunocompromised patients, persistent viremia may occur despite negative IgM antibodies, so PCR is often the preferred diagnostic test."

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

If you are pregnant and may have been exposed to parvovirus B19, if you have a chronic red blood cell disorder and develop sudden anemia, if you are immunocompromised and have persistent fever or anemia, or if your test result is positive, consult a doctor promptly.

Limitations

  • Qualitative PCR does not provide a viral load or quantify the amount of virus
  • Detection of B19 DNA does not by itself distinguish acute, recent, or persistent infection
  • False-negative results are possible if the sample is not collected, transported, or stored according to specifications
  • This test cannot determine past immunity or immune status

  • Rarely, bleeding, infection, or dizziness after blood draw
