Doctor's Notes

Reviewed by — MBBS, MD (Medical Genetics) · Reg. No. 8532

"Neutralizing antibody tests provide useful serological information, but clinical correlation with symptomatic infection, exposure history and vaccination records is essential. The result should not be used as the sole measure of protection."

Understanding Your Results

Neutralizing antibody results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical history, vaccination record, exposure risk and timing of specimen collection.
📊

Negative

No neutralizing antibodies detected. It may indicate no prior infection/vaccination response, waning antibodies, or sample collected too early after exposure.

📊

Equivocal

Borderline result. Repeat testing in 10–14 days with a fresh sample is recommended.

📊

Positive

Neutralizing antibodies detected. Suggests past infection or vaccine-induced humoral immune response. This does not guarantee individual protection from reinfection.

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

If your test is positive, negative, or equivocal, discuss the result with a physician who can correlate it with your vaccination history, symptoms, and potential exposure. Do not alter your COVID-19 precautions based on a single antibody result.

Limitations

  • Not for diagnosis of active infection
  • Does not quantify absolute protection or duration of immunity
  • May be negative in early infection and wane over time
  • Different assays may yield different cut-offs or results
  • T-cell-mediated immunity is not measured by this test

Risks & Considerations

  • Mild pain or bruising at injection site
  • Dizziness/Fainting (rare)
  • Infection at puncture site (very rare)
  • Excessive bleeding (rare)

Interfering Factors

  • Hemolysis, lipemia, or microbial contamination
  • Incorrect sample storage or prolonged transport
  • Recent blood transfusion or plasma exchange
  • Immunosuppressive medications or immunodeficiencies
  • Collection too soon after infection (<14 days)

What does a positive result mean?
A positive result indicates that neutralizing antibodies were detected, likely due to past infection or vaccination. It does not guarantee protection from reinfection.
What does a negative result mean?
A negative result may mean no detectable antibodies, waning antibody levels, or that the sample was collected too early after infection or vaccination.
When is the best time to take this test?
The ideal time is at least 2–4 weeks after symptom onset or vaccination, but you should follow your physician's advice based on your clinical situation.
Do I need a doctor's prescription for this test?
