Doctor's Notes

Reviewed by — MBBS, MD (Pathology) · Reg. No. 21521

"Strict adherence to the 48-hour dietary and drug restrictions is the single most important pre-analytical factor. Without this, the serum serotonin result can be misleading and may lead to unnecessary investigations."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of the Serotonin (5-HT) Serum Test at DNA Labs India?
The test costs Rs 4500 at DNA Labs India. The price includes the serum analysis by HPLC-EC and, for online bookings, free home sample collection in participating cities.
What does the Serotonin (5-HT) Serum Test measure?
It measures the amount of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) in the serum portion of your blood. Serotonin is a substance that can be produced in excess by certain carcinoid tumours.
Why is this test ordered?
A doctor usually orders it when a carcinoid tumour or neuroendocrine tumour is suspected. It may also be used to monitor known disease or to assess response to treatment.
Is the serotonin serum test used to diagnose depression or anxiety?
No. Although serotonin is associated with mood, a serum serotonin measurement is not a diagnostic test for depression or anxiety. These conditions are diagnosed by clinical assessment.
What should I avoid before the test?
For at least 48 hours before and during specimen collection, avoid bananas, walnuts, tomatoes, pineapples, plums, gooseberries, avocados, aubergines, kiwi fruits, chocolates, strenuous exercise, and drugs such as lithium, MAO inhibitors, methyldopa, reserpine and fluoxetine. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without medical advice.
Do I need to fast for the test?
A routine fasting period is not specifically required for serum serotonin. However, your doctor may order other tests along with serotonin that require fasting. Follow the exact instructions given by your healthcare provider.
What is the normal reference range for serum serotonin?
In adults, the commonly used reference range is approximately 50–200 ng/mL. However, each laboratory should validate its own range. Always interpret values using the reference range printed on your report.
What does an elevated serotonin level mean?
An elevated serum serotonin level can be seen in patients with certain carcinoid tumours, especially midgut carcinoids, and in carcinoid syndrome. It may also result from dietary intake or drugs. A single high value should not be used alone to make a diagnosis.
What does a low serotonin level mean?
A low serum serotonin level is usually not clinically significant on its own. It is not used as a marker for depression. The treating doctor will correlate the value with symptoms and other tests.
When will I get the report?
In most cases, samples received by Tuesday 9 am are reported by Friday. The exact turnaround time is mentioned at the time of booking and can vary by location.
Is free home sample collection available for this test?
Yes. Online bookings for the Serotonin (5-HT) Serum Test include free home sample collection in many cities across India. You should confirm availability for your location when booking.
Which doctor should I consult for my serotonin test results?
The test is generally recommended by an oncologist or a physician. If the result is abnormal, your doctor may refer you to an oncologist for further evaluation with urinary 5-HIAA, imaging and clinical assessment.
