About This Test
Who Should Get This Test

How to Prepare
- No fasting required
- Inform the phlebotomist if you have a history of fainting during blood collection
- Do not stop prescribed medication without consulting your doctor
Doctor's Notes
"A positive serology result should never be interpreted alone. Autoantibodies can appear years before symptoms, so clinical correlation with a rheumatologist is essential."

- Hemolyzed serum
- Clotted sample
- Improperly labelled collection tube
- Sample stored at room temperature for more than 6 hours
- Use of a non-SST or wrong anticoagulant tube
Understanding Your Results
Strongly supports the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus.
May be seen in healthy people or in other autoimmune conditions; requires clinical correlation.
Associated with active SLE, particularly with kidney involvement.
Highly specific for SLE even if other antibodies are negative.
Suggests possible antiphospholipid syndrome; repeat testing after 12 weeks is often needed for confirmation.
Consult a rheumatologist if you have persistent facial rash, joint swelling, unexplained fever, severe fatigue, hair loss, mouth ulcers, chest pain, or if the SLE panel result is positive or borderline.
Limitations
- ⚠A negative result cannot completely exclude SLE
- ⚠Autoantibodies may be present in people without clinical disease
- ⚠Anti-Sm is specific but not sensitive; absence does not rule out SLE
- ⚠Anti-dsDNA may be low or absent in some SLE patients or during remission
- ⚠This panel does not diagnose all connective tissue or autoimmune diseases
Risks & Considerations
- ●Bruising at the venipuncture site
- ●Dizziness or light-headedness
- ●Local pain or swelling
- ●Infection at the puncture site (very rare)
Interfering Factors
- ●Immunosuppressive therapy such as steroids may reduce autoantibody levels
- ●Intercurrent infections or recent vaccination may cause transiently positive ANA or phospholipid antibodies
- ●Certain drugs such as hydralazine, procainamide, and isoniazid can cause drug-induced lupus and positive ANA
- ●Hemolyzed or lipemic serum samples may interfere with EIA testing
