Overview

The purpose of the Stomach Health Test / Gastro Panel Test is to identify the underlying cause of gastric symptoms through a simple blood draw. It measures biomarkers that reflect gastric mucosal structure and function, enabling detection of H. pylori infection, gastritis, peptic ulcer risk, GERD, and chronic atrophic gastritis—a precancerous condition. This panel serves as a first-line screening tool to guide clinicians in deciding whether further invasive evaluation like endoscopy is required.

Understanding Your Results

The Gastro Panel provides a serological snapshot of gastric mucosal health. The results should be reviewed by a qualified physician or gastroenterologist, who will integrate them with your clinical history. The following patterns are general examples — individual interpretations may vary based on laboratory-specific reference ranges.
📊

Healthy gastric mucosa with no evidence of atrophy or active H. pylori infection.

📊

Indicates H. pylori-associated gastritis. Eradication therapy may be considered based on clinical context.

📊

Suggests chronic atrophic gastritis of the corpus; further endoscopic evaluation is recommended.

📊

Suggests chronic atrophic gastritis of the antrum; confirmatory endoscopy and biopsy are recommended.

📊

Suggestive of hypergastrinemia, possibly related to hypo/achlorhydria or other causes; clinical correlation required.

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

Consult your healthcare provider if you experience persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, or any symptoms that do not improve with routine treatment.

Limitations

  • Serological tests may not reliably distinguish between past and current H. pylori infection.
  • Reference ranges can vary between laboratories, populations, and methods.
  • Results are not diagnostic on their own and must be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms and other investigations.
  • The panel does not replace upper GI endoscopy and biopsy when mucosal damage is strongly suspected.

Risks & Considerations

  • Bruising at the needle site
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Infection (very rare)
  • Prolonged bleeding (unlikely)

Interfering Factors

  • Use of proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole) within 1 week prior to testing
  • Use of H2 receptor blockers (e.g., ranitidine) within 1 week prior
  • Smoking within 4 hours before sample collection
  • Recent food intake (not fasting as required)
  • Concurrent infections or autoimmune diseases
  • Improper sample handling or contamination

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Stomach Health Test / Gastro Panel Test?
It is a blood test that assesses gastric mucosal health by measuring pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and H. pylori antibody IgG. It helps identify the cause of stomach symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and acidity.
Who should take this test?
Individuals with dyspepsia, hyperacidity, flatulence, epigastric pain, reflux disease, history of H. pylori infection, or autoimmune conditions such as thyroiditis, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and celiac disease should consider taking this test.
Is fasting required before the test?
Yes, overnight fasting is mandatory. You should not eat or drink anything except water for at least 8 hours before blood sample collection.
Can I take my regular medicines before the test?
No. You should avoid drugs such as Ranitidine, Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole, Omeprazole, Esomeprazole, and Lansoprazole for at least one week prior to sample collection. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
Why avoid PPIs before the test?
Proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor blockers alter gastric acid secretion, which can affect gastrin and pepsinogen levels and lead to inaccurate test results.
What is the cost of this test in India?
The test costs around Rs 4,500. DNA Labs India offers it at a special discounted price of Rs 4,500 with free home sample collection in many cities across India.
How long does it take to get the report?
If your sample is submitted on Monday or Thursday by 9:00 AM, the report will be available the next working day.
Is the test a substitute for endoscopy?
No. The Gastro Panel is a non-invasive screening tool. It can indicate the need for endoscopy, but it does not replace visual inspection or tissue biopsy during endoscopy.
What does H. pylori antibody IgG positive mean?
A positive result indicates current or past H. pylori infection. Additional tests may be needed to determine whether the infection is active and requires eradication therapy.
Can this test diagnose stomach cancer?
This test can identify chronic atrophic gastritis, which is a precancerous condition, but it is not a cancer diagnostic test. Abnormal findings should be evaluated by a gastroenterologist for further workup.
Does the test require any special preparation besides fasting?
Yes, you must avoid smoking for at least 4 hours before sample collection. Also, a duly filled Stomach Health Test / Gastro Panel Form (Form 46) is mandatory.
Is home sample collection available?
Yes, DNA Labs India offers free home sample collection for online bookings for this test in multiple cities. A trained phlebotomist will visit your location to collect the blood sample.
