Overview
The primary purpose of STR profiling is to generate a unique DNA profile for an individual. This profile can be used for: 1) Forensic identification – matching crime scene evidence to suspects or victims. 2) Paternity testing – confirming biological father-child relationships. 3) Immigration cases – proving family relationships for visa applications. 4) Missing person identification – helping in disaster victim identification. 5) Genetic genealogy – tracing ancestry and family history. 6) Legal disputes – resolving inheritance or custody cases. STR profiling provides conclusive evidence with a high degree of accuracy, making it an indispensable tool in modern medicine and law.

Sample Collection
No special preparation is required. Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes before a buccal swab to reduce contamination. Inform the lab if you have had a blood transfusion or bone marrow transplant within the last 6 months.
Method: Blood or buccal swab
Laboratory Analysis
For buccal swab, a sterile cotton swab is rubbed gently inside the cheek for about 30 seconds. For blood sample, a standard venipuncture is performed. The procedure is quick and painless.
Report Delivery
You can resume normal activities immediately. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within 10 days.

Test Parameters & Specifications
Sample Stability
- Sample not labeled or mislabeled
- Insufficient quantity of DNA
- Hemolyzed blood sample
- Sample contaminated with foreign material
- Sample received after prolonged storage without proper conditions
Understanding Your Results
Profile is complete and suitable for comparison
Individual inherited the same allele from both parents
Possible contamination or mixed sample; repeat analysis may be needed
Possible DNA degradation or PCR failure; consider re-extraction
If you are considering STR profiling for paternity or legal reasons, consult a genetic counselor or legal advisor. For forensic purposes, law enforcement will guide you. If you have concerns about genetic testing, discuss with a healthcare provider.
Limitations
- ⚠STR profiling cannot determine exact age or physical appearance
- ⚠Results are probabilistic; extremely rare coincidences possible
- ⚠Requires high-quality DNA; degraded samples may fail
- ⚠Legal cases may require chain-of-custody documentation
- ⚠Not a substitute for medical diagnosis of genetic disorders
Risks & Considerations
- ●Minimal risk of bruising or infection at blood draw site
- ●No significant medical risks associated with buccal swab
- ●Psychological impact of paternity or identity results
Interfering Factors
- ●Contamination of sample with foreign DNA
- ●Degraded DNA due to improper storage or handling
- ●Presence of PCR inhibitors (e.g., heme, humic acid)
- ●Insufficient DNA quantity
- ●Mixed DNA samples (e.g., from multiple individuals)
