Results help the treating doctor decide how long to continue anticoagulation and whether family members should be screened. Sample Collection
Overnight fasting is preferred. A duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended that the patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and oral anticoagulants for 7 days before sampling, but only with the consent of the treating physician. Do not stop any prescribed medication without medical advice.
Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
A phlebotomist will collect 3 mL of whole blood into a Blue Top sodium citrate tube and 5 mL of whole blood into two Lavender Top EDTA tubes. The citrate tube should be mixed gently by inversion to ensure proper anticoagulation.
Report Delivery
The citrate tube must be transported to the laboratory within 4 hours. If this is not possible, platelet-poor plasma should be prepared within 1 hour of collection and frozen immediately. EDTA tubes should be shipped refrigerated, not frozen. Resume prescribed medications only on the treating physician's advice.

How to Prepare
- Sample type: 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. Mix thoroughly by inversion.
- Transport to lab within 4 hours.
- If transport is delayed, make platelet-poor plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection: centrifuge at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, transfer supernatant, centrifuge again, transfer to labelled plastic screw-capped vial and freeze immediately. Do not thaw.
- EDTA sample: 5 mL (3 mL minimum) whole blood in 2 Lavender Top (EDTA) tubes. Ship refrigerated. Do not freeze.
- Overnight fasting is preferred and Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) must be duly filled.
