Before the Test:Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, recent surgeries, radioiodine therapy, and lab tests. Wait at least 6 weeks after thyroidectomy, needle biopsy, or I-131 therapy before giving your blood sample.

During the Test:A phlebotomist will clean the inside of your elbow, tie a tourniquet, and insert a needle into your vein to collect the blood sample. The process takes only a few minutes.

After the Test:Apply light pressure to the needle site for a few minutes. You may resume normal diet and activities immediately. Bruising at the site is uncommon but possible.

  • Reference ranges are method- and laboratory-specific
  • The test is not useful for screening thyroid cancer in the general population
