Sample Collection
No special preparation is needed. You can eat and drink normally. Please inform your doctor about chest pain, symptoms, current medications, and any supplements you are taking.
Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
A trained phlebotomist will collect a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The procedure takes only a few minutes.

About This Test
Who Should Get This Test
To measure circulating cardiac troponin I using a high-sensitivity method, helping diagnose myocardial infarction, assess myocardial injury, and guide urgent treatment decisions.
How to Prepare
- No special preparation or fasting is required
- Inform the technician if you are experiencing chest pain, breathlessness, or other heart-related symptoms
- A blood sample will be drawn from a vein in your arm
- Samples should be stored refrigerated or frozen and shipped as advised by the laboratory

"hsTnI must always be interpreted using the 99th percentile reference limit and serial change. A single value is not enough to confirm myocardial infarction."

Test Parameters & Specifications
Sample Stability
- Haemolysed sample
- Sample with improper or missing labeling
- Sample received outside the recommended storage or transport conditions
Understanding Your Results
hsTnI below 99th percentile
No detectable myocardial injury. If symptoms persist or clinical suspicion is high, repeat testing after 1 to 3 hours is often needed.
hsTnI above 99th percentile with significant rise or fall
Consistent with acute myocardial injury/infarction in the appropriate clinical setting.
Persistent or chronic hsTnI elevation
May be seen in heart failure, chronic kidney disease, myocarditis, structural heart disease, or other non-acute causes.
Normal initial hsTnI soon after symptom onset
Does not exclude myocardial infarction; serial sampling is recommended because troponin may peak later.
If you have chest pain, pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain radiating to the arm, neck, jaw, or back, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Limitations
- ⚠A single normal hsTnI result does not exclude a very early myocardial infarction; serial testing at 1 to 3 hours is recommended
- ⚠Elevated hsTnI indicates myocardial injury but not the specific cause; it may be elevated in heart failure, myocarditis, renal disease, sepsis, and pulmonary embolism
- ⚠Reference ranges and 99th percentile cutoffs are assay-specific and must be interpreted against the laboratory's stated values
Risks & Considerations
- ●Minimal pain or bruising at the puncture site
- ●Dizziness or fainting during blood collection
- ●Rare infection or excessive bleeding at the collection site
Interfering Factors
- ●Haemolysed blood samples may interfere with immunoassay results
- ●Heterophilic antibodies or autoantibodies may cause false elevation or false depression
- ●High-dose biotin supplementation may interfere with certain immunoassays
- ●Assay-specific reagents may produce variable absolute values, so different assays are not interchangeable
