Who Should Get This Test
The purpose of the Culture Aerobic Body Fluids Rapid Test is to accurately diagnose bacterial infections in body fluids, determine the specific bacteria causing the infection, and assess antibiotic sensitivity to guide appropriate and effective treatment.
How to Prepare
- Collect 8-10 mL of body fluid aseptically in a Plus Aerobic bottle available from LPL
- For children under 12 years or low fluid volumes, collect 3 mL (minimum 0.5 mL) in a Special Paeds Plus bottle
- Mix the sample by gentle swirling to ensure proper distribution
- Ship the sample at room temperature without refrigeration or freezing

- Sample collected in improper container or contaminated
- Insufficient sample volume
- Sample left at improper temperature for extended periods
Understanding Your Results
Negative Growth
No aerobic bacteria detected in the sample. Consider other causes of symptoms if clinical suspicion remains.
Positive Growth with Sensitive Bacteria
Bacterial infection identified, and the bacteria are sensitive to commonly used antibiotics. Treatment can be initiated with appropriate antibiotics.
Positive Growth with Resistant Bacteria
Bacterial infection identified, but the bacteria show resistance to some antibiotics. Alternative antibiotics may be required based on sensitivity results.
Consult a doctor if you experience persistent or worsening symptoms of infection, such as fever, pain, or swelling, or if test results indicate bacterial growth requiring treatment.
Limitations
- ⚠May not detect slow-growing or anaerobic bacteria
- ⚠Results are dependent on sample quality and incubation conditions
- ⚠Does not identify viral or fungal infections
Risks & Considerations
- ●Minimal risks associated with sample collection, such as slight pain or bruising at the collection site
- ●Rare risk of infection if aseptic techniques are not followed
Interfering Factors
- ●Prior or concurrent antibiotic therapy may inhibit bacterial growth
- ●Improper sample collection or contamination can affect results
- ●Delays in sample processing or incubation may impact accuracy
