Overview
The test is designed to detect genetic variants in the FAAH2 gene associated with autism spectrum disorder. It provides clinicians with genetic information that can complement developmental and behavioural assessments, clarify the genetic contribution to ASD, and assist in genetic counselling of the family.
- Test Code
- 3922
- Price
- ₹20,000
- Sample Type
- Blood or Extracted DNA or One drop Blood on FTA Card
- Result Time
- Reports are delivered within 3 to 4 weeks after the sample reaches the laboratory.
- Fasting Required
- No
- Method
- Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)
Sample Collection
No fasting is required. A pre-test genetic counselling session is advised to discuss the purpose, limitations and expected outcomes of the test. A clinical history should be provided, and a pedigree chart of family members affected with autism or related neurodevelopmental conditions will be prepared during counselling.
Method: Blood draw, saliva sample, or blood spot on FTA card
Laboratory Analysis
The sample is collected by a trained phlebotomist. For blood, 2-3 ml is drawn in an EDTA tube. If preferred, one drop of blood is placed on an FTA card. Alternatively, a saliva sample can be collected using the provided kit.
Report Delivery
No special precautions are required after sample collection. The patient can resume normal daily activities. The sample will be transported to the laboratory under recommended storage conditions.
Timeline: Reports are delivered within 3 to 4 weeks after the sample reaches the laboratory.

About This Test
Who Should Get This Test
The test is designed to detect genetic variants in the FAAH2 gene associated with autism spectrum disorder. It provides clinicians with genetic information that can complement developmental and behavioural assessments, clarify the genetic contribution to ASD, and assist in genetic counselling of the family.
How to Prepare
- Keep the sample at room temperature before dispatch if collected on FTA card.
- If venous blood is collected, the EDTA tube should be gently inverted 8-10 times.
- Label the sample container with the patient name, date of birth and collection date.
- Avoid direct handling of the FTA card area; use clean gloves.
- The sample may be stored at 2-8°C for up to 48 hours before shipping.

"When autism spectrum disorder presents in a child, a genetic test such as the FAAH2 NGS panel can help families understand recurrence risk and guide counselling. If a variant is identified, personalised management and family screening should be considered."

Test Parameters & Specifications
Sample Stability
- Hemolyzed or clotted blood sample
- Insufficient sample quantity preventing DNA extraction
- Sample leaking in transit
- Unlabeled or mislabeled sample
- Sample received after prolonged transit time without proper storage
Understanding Your Results
Negative
No pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant detected in the FAAH2 gene. This does not rule out autism caused by other genes or non-genetic factors.
Positive
A pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant in the FAAH2 gene was identified, which may contribute to the autism phenotype. Genetic counselling and family screening are recommended.
Variant of Uncertain Significance
A DNA variant was detected, but its effect on the FAAH2 protein is unknown. Additional family studies may help clarify its clinical significance.
Consult a clinical geneticist, neurologist or paediatrician if the child shows early signs of autism, communication difficulties, restricted interests, repetitive behaviour, or has a family history of a FAAH2-related condition. Post-test genetic counselling should be scheduled for all positive, negative and VUS results.
Limitations
- ⚠NGS may not detect large structural rearrangements, repeat expansions, or deep intronic variants.
- ⚠Mosaic variants below the detection threshold may not be reported.
- ⚠Variants of uncertain significance (VUS) may be identified; interpretation requires clinical correlation and family testing.
- ⚠A negative result does not exclude all genetic or non-genetic causes of autism spectrum disorder.
- ⚠This test is not intended to diagnose autism independently; it is an adjunct to clinical assessment.
Risks & Considerations
- ●Slight pain or bruising at the blood collection site
- ●Minimal risk of infection at the puncture site, which is reduced by standard sterile technique
- ●No radiation exposure associated with this genetic test
Interfering Factors
- ●Recent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation
- ●Recent blood transfusion within 48 hours may contaminate sample
- ●Insufficient or degraded DNA
- ●Tissue or DNA contamination with another individual's genetic material
