Sample Collection
Patient should avoid Biotin supplementation for at least 8 hours prior to specimen collection. Overnight fasting is preferred. A duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. Inform the phlebotomist about all current medications and supplements.
Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
Three separate blood samples will be collected via standard venipuncture: (1) 3 mL serum from 1 SST, (2) 2 mL plasma from 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube, and (3) 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. The EDTA plasma must be separated within 2 hours of collection. The Sodium Citrate tube must be mixed thoroughly by inversion and transported to the lab within 4 hours.
Report Delivery
Apply pressure to the venipuncture site with a cotton ball or gauze for several minutes. Mild bruising or soreness at the collection site is normal and typically resolves within a few days. Resume normal activities and diet as directed by your physician.

How to Prepare
- Patient should avoid Biotin supplementation for at least 8 hours prior to specimen collection
- Overnight fasting is preferred before sample collection
- Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory and must accompany the samples
- Collect 3 mL serum from 1 SST; ship refrigerated or frozen
- Collect 2 mL (1 mL min.) plasma from 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube; separate plasma within 2 hours of collection; ship refrigerated or frozen
- Collect 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube; mix thoroughly by inversion; transport to lab within 4 hours
- If lab transport within 4 hours is not possible for the Sodium Citrate sample, prepare Platelet-Poor Plasma (PPP) within 1 hour: centrifuge at 3600 rpm for 15 min, transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube, centrifuge again at 3600 rpm for 15 min, transfer final supernatant (PPP) to a labelled clean plastic screw-capped vial, and FREEZE IMMEDIATELY. Ship frozen. DO NOT THAW.
