Overview
The primary purpose of this test is to detect and quantify RSV A and RSV B viral RNA in respiratory secretions. It aids in diagnosing acute RSV infection, distinguishing it from other respiratory viruses, and monitoring viral load in high-risk patients. Quantitative results help clinicians assess disease severity, predict clinical course, and evaluate the effectiveness of antiviral treatment. The test is also valuable for epidemiological surveillance and outbreak management.

How to Prepare
- For nasopharyngeal swab: Insert swab into nostril parallel to palate, leave in place for a few seconds, then rotate and withdraw.
- For sputum: Collect early morning sample in a sterile container after rinsing mouth with water.
- For bronchial lavage: Performed by a healthcare professional during bronchoscopy.
- Ensure sample is placed in viral transport medium immediately after collection.

Test Parameters & Specifications
Sample Stability
- Sample not in viral transport medium
- Insufficient quantity
- Leaked or broken container
- Improper labeling
- Sample received after prolonged delay without proper storage
Understanding Your Results
No RSV RNA detected. Active RSV infection is unlikely, but clinical correlation is advised.
RSV present with low viral burden. May indicate early infection or resolving infection. Monitor clinically.
RSV present with high viral burden. Likely active infection with potential for severe disease. Initiate appropriate management.
Consult a doctor immediately if you or your child experience difficulty breathing, wheezing, high fever, or signs of dehydration. Early medical intervention can prevent complications.
Limitations
- ⚠A negative result does not completely rule out RSV infection if sample quality is poor
- ⚠Viral load may not correlate directly with disease severity in all patients
- ⚠Test cannot differentiate between RSV A and B if both are present (though this test does)
- ⚠Quantitative results should be interpreted in clinical context
Risks & Considerations
- ●Mild discomfort during sample collection
- ●Minor bleeding from nasal swab (rare)
- ●No significant systemic risks
Interfering Factors
- ●Improper sample collection or storage may degrade viral RNA
- ●Presence of inhibitors in respiratory specimens (e.g., mucus) can affect PCR
- ●Recent antiviral therapy may reduce viral load
- ●Co-infection with other respiratory viruses may complicate interpretation
