About This Test
Who Should Get This Test
The test is useful for epidemiology/prevalence studies and to facilitate contact tracing. It helps detect past SARS-CoV-2 infection and monitor the antibody response to the virus.
How to Prepare
- Mandatory: Completed Covid-19 Antibody Test Form (Form 45).
- No fasting is required.
- Drink water normally before the test.
- Inform the technician if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking anticoagulant medications.
Doctor's Notes
"This serology test helps evaluate prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure. It should not be used for the diagnosis of active COVID-19 infection; RT-PCR remains the preferred test during acute illness."
Test Parameters & Specifications
Sample Stability
- Sample received without the mandatory Covid-19 Antibody Test Form (Form 45).
- Unlabeled or mislabeled sample.
- Severely hemolyzed, lipemic, or icteric sample.
- Sample transported incorrectly or left at room temperature for more than 8 hours.
Understanding Your Results
Positive / Reactive
Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 are detected. This indicates a previous infection or vaccination. It does not confirm protective immunity.
Negative / Non-reactive
No detectable antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. This may indicate no prior exposure, early infection before antibody development, or an inadequate immune response.
Equivocal / Borderline
The signal is near the cutoff. A repeat test on a fresh sample after a few days is recommended.
If you have current symptoms of COVID-19, an antibody test is not appropriate for diagnosis. Contact your doctor for RT-PCR or antigen testing. If you receive an equivocal result or have questions about your antibody status, discuss the result with your physician.
Limitations
- ⚠This test is not intended for the diagnosis of acute COVID-19 infection.
- ⚠A negative result does not rule out past infection, especially if the sample was collected too early.
- ⚠A positive result does not guarantee protective immunity against reinfection.
- ⚠The duration of antibody persistence is not well defined by this test.
- ⚠Results should be correlated with clinical history, exposure, and vaccination status.
Risks & Considerations
- ●Slight pain or bruising at the puncture site
- ●Bleeding
- ●Dizziness or fainting
- ●Infection at the puncture site (rare)
Interfering Factors
- ●Cross-reactivity with other coronaviruses may cause false positive results.
- ●Immunocompromised individuals may have delayed or absent antibody response.
- ●Sample collected too early after infection may be negative before seroconversion.
- ●Severe hemolysis, lipemia, or icterus may interfere with the assay.
- ●Recent blood transfusion or haemodilution may affect antibody levels.
