Understanding Your Results

Interpretation of the typhoid fever panel should be done by a healthcare professional with reference to clinical history. This panel combines antibody, antigen, and culture-based methods for comprehensive evaluation.
📊

Typhi Dot IgM Positive

Recent or current typhoid fever likely

📊

Blood Culture Positive

Confirmed typhoid fever; antibiotic sensitivity will guide treatment

📊

All Negative

Active typhoid unlikely; other causes of fever should be considered

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

If you have persistent fever, abdominal discomfort, or suspected exposure to typhoid, consult your doctor and undergo testing.

Limitations

  • Typhi Dot IgM may be negative in the first week of infection
  • Blood culture sensitivity decreases after antibiotic use
  • Stool antigen may be positive in carriers without active disease

Risks & Considerations

  • Minimal pain or bruising at venipuncture site
  • Fainting or dizziness during blood collection
  • Infection (rare, but possible if wound becomes infected)

Interfering Factors

  • Recent antibiotic therapy may reduce bacterial load and affect culture results
  • Prior typhoid vaccination may cause false-positive antibody results
  • Cross-reacting antibodies from other Salmonella infections

How is the test performed?
A blood sample is collected from a vein, and a stool sample is provided in a sterile container. The blood sample is also inoculated into a special aerobic culture bottle.
Do I need to fast before the test?

What is the difference between Widal test and Typhi Dot?
The Widal test detects antibodies from the second week of illness, while Typhi Dot detects early IgM antibodies from the first week. Typhi Dot has better sensitivity for recent infection.
Can this test detect typhoid in the first week?
Yes, the Typhi Dot IgM component can detect early immune response, often during the first week of symptoms, unlike the Widal test.
What sample types are collected?
The panel requires a serum sample, a stool sample, and a blood sample for culture.
Are there any risks associated with the test?
Risks are minimal and include mild pain or bruising at the blood draw site, possible dizziness, and a very low risk of infection.
What if the blood culture is positive?
A positive blood culture confirms typhoid fever. The lab will perform identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing to guide appropriate treatment.
