Overview
CD34+ cell quantification is necessary to determine the optimal timing and to confirm the adequacy of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) harvests. This assay also helps to determine when to perform Bone marrow stem cell transplants; whether to continue Apheresis and to assess bone marrow and Cord blood viability. CD34+ absolute count is a critical parameter for rapid and sustained engraftment.

How to Prepare
- For whole blood: Collect 3 mL in Lavender Top (EDTA) tube and 3 mL in Green Top (Sodium Heparin) tube
- For bone marrow: Collect 2 mL in Green Top (Sodium Heparin) tube
- For cord blood or apheresis: Collect 1 mL in a sterile screw capped container
- Ship immediately at specified temperatures: 18-22°C for blood/bone marrow, 2-8°C for cord blood/apheresis
- Do not freeze samples
- Specify time, date, and clinical details on test request form

- Hemolyzed or clotted samples
- Samples not stored at recommended temperatures
- Insufficient sample volume
- Improperly labeled samples
Understanding Your Results
Elevated CD34+ count
May indicate active stem cell mobilization, certain leukemias, or recovery after chemotherapy.
Low CD34+ count
Suggests inadequate stem cell harvest or bone marrow failure; may affect transplant success.
Normal CD34+ count
Within expected range for the clinical context; further evaluation may be needed based on symptoms.
If you experience symptoms such as persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, frequent infections, or abnormal bleeding, consult a doctor. Abnormal test results should be discussed with a hematologist or oncologist for proper management.
Limitations
- ⚠Requires specialized flow cytometry equipment and trained personnel
- ⚠Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other tests
Risks & Considerations
- ●Minor bruising or pain at the puncture site
- ●Rare risk of infection or excessive bleeding
- ●Dizziness during blood draw
Interfering Factors
- ●Sample hemolysis or clotted blood
- ●Improper sample storage or delay in processing
- ●Use of certain medications that affect stem cell mobilization
