Overnight fasting is preferred. Discontinue heparin for 1 day and oral anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, with your physician's consent. Avoid strenuous exercise immediately before the test.

Laboratory Analysis

A trained phlebotomist will collect blood from a vein in your arm. Three separate tubes are drawn: two sodium citrate tubes, one EDTA tube, and one serum separator tube. Ensure the citrate tubes are filled to the marked line and mixed gently by inversion.

Step 3

Report Delivery

Apply pressure to the puncture site for a few minutes. You can resume your normal diet and activities right away. Mild bruising or discomfort may occur at the site and usually resolves quickly.

How to Prepare

  • Collect 6 mL whole blood in 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes. Mix thoroughly by inversion.
  • Transport to lab within 4 hours. If not possible, prepare PPP (platelet-poor plasma) within 1 hour of collection: centrifuge at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube, centrifuge again at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, and transfer the final supernatant to a labeled plastic screw-capped vial. Freeze immediately and ship frozen.
  • Collect 3 mL (2 mL min.) whole blood in 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube. Ship refrigerated.
  • Collect 3 mL (1 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Ship refrigerated or frozen.
  • Overnight fasting is preferred.
  • Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory.
