Step 1

Sample Collection

Overnight fasting is preferred. Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended that the patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, with prior consent from the treating physician.

Method: Venipuncture

Step 2

Laboratory Analysis

Blood is drawn from a vein into sodium citrate tubes and mixed thoroughly by gentle inversion to ensure proper anticoagulation.

Step 3

Report Delivery

Pressure is applied at the puncture site until bleeding stops. Patients should resume any discontinued medication only on the advice of their treating physician.

Timeline: Samples received by 11 AM are generally reported by 6 PM on the same day.

Patient Instructions

1
Before the Test:Inform your physician about all medications you are taking. You may be advised to stop heparin or oral anticoagulants for a specified period before testing. Fasting is preferred but not mandatory.
2
During the Test:A blood sample will be collected from a vein using standard venipuncture. The process takes only a few minutes.
3
After the Test:You can resume normal activities immediately. If you experience persistent bleeding from the puncture site, contact your doctor.

About This Test

Who Should Get This Test

The primary purpose of the VWD panel is to diagnose von Willebrand disease and to differentiate quantitative from qualitative VWF defects, thereby enabling correct classification and treatment planning.

How to Prepare

  • Collect 6 mL whole blood in 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes.
  • Mix thoroughly by inversion immediately after collection.
  • Transport the sample to the laboratory within 4 hours at room temperature.
  • If transport is delayed, prepare platelet-poor plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection by double centrifugation and freeze immediately.
  • Do not thaw the frozen sample before analysis.

Doctor's Notes

Reviewed by — MBBS, MD (Pathology) · Reg. No. 21521

"The VWD panel is a targeted first-line investigation for suspected von Willebrand disease. Results must be interpreted alongside the patient's bleeding history and ABO blood group, and borderline values may need confirmation on a repeat sample."

Understanding Your Results

The VWD panel should be interpreted by a haematologist in the context of the patient's bleeding history, family history, ABO blood group, and clinical examination.
📊

Suggests a quantitative VWF deficiency, consistent with Type 1 VWD or a carrier state.

📊

May suggest severe quantitative deficiency, such as Type 3 VWD.

📊

Suggests a qualitative VWF defect, supporting a Type 2 VWD variant.

📊

Does not completely exclude mild or acquired VWD; VWF levels fluctuate.

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

If you have recurrent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, prolonged bleeding after cuts or procedures, easy bruising, or a family history of VWD, consult a haematologist.

Limitations

  • No single test can diagnose all VWD types; the panel should be interpreted alongside clinical findings.
  • The panel does not include VWF multimer analysis, desmopressin challenge, platelet-type VWD testing, or genetic analysis.
  • Borderline results may need repeat testing or additional specialised assays.

Risks & Considerations

  • Minor bleeding or bruising at the puncture site
  • Local discomfort
  • Infection at the puncture site (very rare)

Interfering Factors

  • Heparin and oral anticoagulants may affect clotting-based assay results.
  • Pregnancy, oestrogen therapy, acute illness, exercise, and stress can increase VWF levels.
  • Blood group O is associated with lower baseline vWF levels.
  • Haemolysis, lipemia, or an under-filled citrate tube may cause inaccurate results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VWD Panel test?
The VWD Panel test measures vWF antigen, vWF ristocetin cofactor activity, vWF collagen binding activity, and factor VIII activity to help diagnose von Willebrand disease.
How much does the VWD Panel test cost at DNA Labs India?
The VWD Panel test cost at DNA Labs India is Rs 32000, with free home sample collection for online bookings.
Is fasting required before the VWD Panel test?
Overnight fasting is preferred but not mandatory. Follow your doctor's specific instructions before the test.
What sample is needed for the VWD Panel test?
The test requires 6 mL whole blood collected in 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes, which is then processed to obtain platelet-poor plasma.
Do I need to stop medicines before this test?
It is recommended to stop heparin for 1 day and oral anticoagulants for 7 days before sampling, but only with the prior consent of your treating physician.

Can the VWD Panel test identify the VWD subtype?
The panel helps classify VWD by showing the pattern of vWF antigen, activity, collagen binding, and factor VIII levels. Additional tests may be required for exact subtyping.
What is von Willebrand disease?
Von Willebrand disease is a common inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of von Willebrand factor, a protein needed for blood clotting.
Who should take the VWD Panel test?
It is recommended for people with mucocutaneous bleeding such as nosebleeds, heavy menstrual bleeding, easy bruising, gum bleeding, or a family history of VWD.
Are there any risks in the VWD Panel test?
