Sample Collection
Overnight fasting is preferred. Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended that the patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, with prior consent from the treating physician.
Method: Venipuncture
Laboratory Analysis
Blood is drawn from a vein into sodium citrate tubes and mixed thoroughly by gentle inversion to ensure proper anticoagulation.
Report Delivery
Pressure is applied at the puncture site until bleeding stops. Patients should resume any discontinued medication only on the advice of their treating physician.

Who Should Get This Test
The primary purpose of the VWD panel is to diagnose von Willebrand disease and to differentiate quantitative from qualitative VWF defects, thereby enabling correct classification and treatment planning.
How to Prepare
- Collect 6 mL whole blood in 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes.
- Mix thoroughly by inversion immediately after collection.
- Transport the sample to the laboratory within 4 hours at room temperature.
- If transport is delayed, prepare platelet-poor plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection by double centrifugation and freeze immediately.
- Do not thaw the frozen sample before analysis.

Understanding Your Results
Suggests a quantitative VWF deficiency, consistent with Type 1 VWD or a carrier state.
May suggest severe quantitative deficiency, such as Type 3 VWD.
Suggests a qualitative VWF defect, supporting a Type 2 VWD variant.
Does not completely exclude mild or acquired VWD; VWF levels fluctuate.
If you have recurrent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, prolonged bleeding after cuts or procedures, easy bruising, or a family history of VWD, consult a haematologist.
Limitations
- ⚠No single test can diagnose all VWD types; the panel should be interpreted alongside clinical findings.
- ⚠The panel does not include VWF multimer analysis, desmopressin challenge, platelet-type VWD testing, or genetic analysis.
- ⚠Borderline results may need repeat testing or additional specialised assays.

Interfering Factors

- ●Haemolysis, lipemia, or an under-filled citrate tube may cause inaccurate results.
