Sample Collection
A doctor's prescription is required. Inform your physician about all medications, especially immunosuppressants and anticoagulants. You may be advised to hold anticoagulants before the biopsy. Fasting is not required. The biopsy is performed by a clinician, usually under ultrasound guidance.

Laboratory Analysis
The patient lies prone or on the side. The skin is cleaned and numbed with local anesthesia. A thin needle is inserted into the kidney to obtain a small tissue core. The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes. You may feel pressure but should not experience severe pain.
Report Delivery
After the biopsy, you will be monitored for a few hours for bleeding or complications. You may be advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities for 24-48 hours. Drink plenty of fluids to help flush out any blood. Contact your doctor if you experience severe pain, fever, or blood in urine.

How to Prepare
- Tissue must be placed immediately in 10% neutral buffered formalin for histopathology
- If IF is also required, a separate sample in Michel's medium is needed (not for this test)
- Label the container with patient name, date, and site
- Transport at room temperature to the laboratory as soon as possible
