Who Should Get This Test
The purpose of this test is to measure the presence and level of IgM antiphospholipid antibodies in the blood. It helps in the evaluation of unexplained thrombosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, and suspected autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome.
How to Prepare
- Collect 2 mL serum (minimum 1 mL) in an SST.
- Ship the sample refrigerated or frozen.
- Samples should be collected Monday through Saturday by 9 am for same-day reporting.

Negative
No significant IgM antiphospholipid antibody detected.
Equivocal
Borderline antibody level; repeat testing may be needed.
Positive
IgM antiphospholipid antibodies present; requires clinical correlation and repeat testing after 12 weeks if antiphospholipid syndrome is suspected.
Consult your doctor if you have unexplained blood clots, recurrent pregnancy loss, livedo reticularis, joint pain and stiffness, fatigue, skin rashes, fever, or a low platelet count.
Limitations
- ⚠A single positive result is not enough to diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome; positivity should be documented on two or more occasions at least 12 weeks apart.
- ⚠IgM antibodies are less specific than IgG for antiphospholipid syndrome in some patient groups, so clinical correlation is essential.
- ⚠Reference ranges vary between laboratories and assay kits.
