Overview

The purpose of the Pyruvate Pyruvic Acid Test is to measure the concentration of pyruvate in the blood, which is crucial for evaluating the body's energy metabolism. It helps identify whether the body is appropriately breaking down glucose for energy and is particularly useful in diagnosing mitochondrial disorders, pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, and other metabolic conditions. This test is often performed with a lactate test to calculate the lactate-to-pyruvate ratio.

About This Test

Who Should Get This Test

The purpose of the Pyruvate Pyruvic Acid Test is to measure the concentration of pyruvate in the blood, which is crucial for evaluating the body's energy metabolism. It helps identify whether the body is appropriately breaking down glucose for energy and is particularly useful in diagnosing mitochondrial disorders, pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, and other metabolic conditions. This test is often performed with a lactate test to calculate the lactate-to-pyruvate ratio.

How to Prepare

  • Collect 3 mL (2 mL min) whole blood in a Grey Top (Sodium Fluoride) tube.
  • Mix whole blood immediately with an equal volume of 7% Perchloric Acid.
  • Mix well and centrifuge immediately.
  • Separate the supernatant and submit a minimum of 2 mL.
  • Ship the sample refrigerated or frozen.

Doctor's Notes

Reviewed by — MBBS, MD (General Medicine) · Reg. No. 8052

"Pyruvate testing is often essential in evaluating children with suspected metabolic myopathies or encephalopathies. It should be combined with lactate measurement for accurate interpretation."

Understanding Your Results

The pyruvate test is used along with lactate to determine the lactate to pyruvate ratio. This ratio helps identify the source of metabolic acidosis and mitochondrial dysfunction.
📊

High lactate-to-pyruvate ratio (>20) suggests a defect in the electron transport chain or pyruvate carboxylase deficiency.

📊

Normal ratio may suggest pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency or disorders of pyruvate metabolism.

📊

Significant mitochondrial/metabolic disease is less likely.

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

If you are experiencing unexplained fatigue, muscle weakness, seizures, developmental delays, or any neurological symptoms, consult a physician. A doctor can determine whether a pyruvate test is suitable for you and help interpret the results.

Limitations

  • A single pyruvate level is not diagnostic and should be interpreted in the context of lactate and clinical findings.
  • Strict preanalytical conditions are necessary; otherwise, results may be falsely elevated or depressed.

Risks & Considerations

  • Slight pain or bruising at the injection site
  • Dizziness
  • Rare risk of infection

Interfering Factors

  • Hemolysis of the blood sample
  • Delayed handling of the sample
  • Failure to immediately mix with perchloric acid
  • Prolonged tourniquet application
  • Recent exercise before blood collection

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Pyruvate Pyruvic Acid Test?
It is a blood test that measures the level of pyruvic acid (pyruvate) in the blood. Pyruvate is a molecule produced during glucose breakdown and is important for energy production.
Why is this test important?
It helps diagnose conditions that affect the body's ability to produce or metabolize pyruvate, such as pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, lactic acidosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and cancer.
What are the symptoms of pyruvate disorders?
Symptoms include fatigue, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, seizures, developmental delays, and neurological symptoms.
How is the test done?
A small blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm. The blood is immediately mixed with perchloric acid to stabilize it, then processed in the laboratory.
Do I need to fast before the test?
No special preparation is required. You can take the test at any time unless your doctor advises otherwise.
What is the cost of the test at DNA Labs India?
The test costs INR 4500, and free home sample collection is available for online bookings.
How long will it take to get the results?
If the sample is submitted by 2 pm, the report is available the same day.
What is the lactate to pyruvate ratio?
This ratio is calculated by dividing the lactate concentration by the pyruvate concentration. A normal ratio is typically 10–20. An elevated ratio may indicate a defect in the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
Are there any risks with the test?
The test involves standard blood collection, so there may be minor pain, bruising, or dizziness. Serious complications are rare.
Is home sample collection available?
Yes, DNA Labs India offers free home sample collection for this test in many cities across India.
Where is this test available?
The test is available across India, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and many other cities.
What should I do if my test results are abnormal?
Consult your doctor to discuss the results and determine the next steps for evaluation and treatment.
