Overview

The purpose of this panel is to analyze serum for ANA and other autoantibodies associated with systemic rheumatic diseases, along with complement C3 and C4. Measuring these markers helps clinicians evaluate the likelihood of an autoimmune process, monitor disease activity, and assess treatment response when interpreted with clinical findings.

Measuring these markers helps clinicians evaluate the likelihood of an autoimmune process, monitor disease activity, and assess treatment response when interpreted with clinical findings.

How to Prepare

  • Overnight fasting is preferred but not strictly mandatory

  • Keep yourself well hydrated unless otherwise advised

Doctor's Notes

Reviewed by — MBBS, MD (Pathology) · Reg. No. 21521

"A comprehensive autoimmune panel can reduce diagnostic delay when symptoms are subtle, but positive autoantibodies alone do not establish a diagnosis. Clinical correlation by a rheumatologist or immunologist remains essential."

Understanding Your Results

Interpretation requires clinical correlation. This panel is not diagnostic by itself and should be reviewed by a qualified physician.
Positive ANA is reported with titer and pattern; it is sensitive for SLE but can also be seen in other autoimmune and even healthy individuals.
Positive anti-dsDNA has high specificity for systemic lupus erythematosus in the appropriate clinical context.
Positive anti-Sm is a specific marker for systemic lupus erythematosus.
Positive anti-U1RNP is associated with mixed connective tissue disease.
Positive anti-SS-A/Ro and anti-SS-B/La are associated with Sjögren's syndrome.
Positive anti-centromere antibody is associated with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis/CREST syndrome.
Rheumatoid factor can be positive in rheumatoid arthritis, other autoimmune diseases, infections, and chronic inflammatory conditions.
Low C3 and/or C4 may indicate complement consumption and immune complex activity.
⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

If you have persistent joint pain, stiffness, fatigue, unexplained fever, skin rashes, or other systemic symptoms, consult a rheumatologist or physician. Abnormal test results should always be discussed with a doctor.

Limitations

  • This panel is not diagnostic by itself and requires clinical correlation
  • ANA can be positive in healthy individuals, especially with increasing age
  • Negative serology does not exclude autoimmune disease
  • Reference ranges and methods may vary between laboratories

Risks & Considerations

  • Bruising at the injection site
  • Bleeding from the puncture site
  • Haematoma
  • Infection (rare)
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Interfering Factors

  • Haemolysis or lipemia may interfere with complement immunoassays
  • Recent infections can cause transient autoantibody positivity
  • Certain medications, especially immunosuppressants and steroids, may affect autoantibody levels
  • Sample contamination or improper storage can alter results
