Sample Stability
- Specimens not stored or shipped at recommended temperature
- Highly haemolysed or lipaemic samples that interfere with the immunoassay
Understanding Your Results
Negative Sm / Negative RNP
No Sm or RNP antibodies detected. This does not exclude an autoimmune disease.
Positive Sm
Suggests systemic lupus erythematosus; Sm is a highly specific marker for SLE.
Positive RNP
May support mixed connective tissue disease; also seen in SLE, Sjogren syndrome, scleroderma and polymyositis.
Positive Sm + Positive RNP
Can be seen in SLE/MCTD overlap; clinical correlation is required.
Consult a rheumatologist or clinical immunologist if you have unexplained fever, fatigue, joint pain, rash, hair loss, Raynaud's phenomenon, or a positive ANA test.
Limitations
- ⚠A negative result does not rule out SLE or MCTD.
- ⚠Sm antibodies are found in only about 20% of SLE patients.
- ⚠RNP antibodies are not specific for SLE and can be seen in other connective tissue diseases.
