Step 1

Sample Collection

Overnight fasting is preferred. Discontinue Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling with physician consent. Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory.

Method: Venipuncture

Step 2

Laboratory Analysis

A healthcare professional will collect 3 mL of whole blood into a Sodium Citrate tube via venipuncture. The sample will be mixed by inversion to prevent clotting.

Step 3

Report Delivery

Apply pressure to the puncture site to stop bleeding. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity with the arm used for collection.

Timeline: Reports are available on Friday or Tuesday for samples collected on Wednesday or Saturday by 9 am.

Patient Instructions

1
Before the Test:Follow fasting instructions and medication discontinuation as advised. Ensure Coagulation Requisition Form is filled.
2
During the Test:A blood sample will be drawn from a vein in your arm. The process is quick and minimally invasive.
3
After the Test:You may resume normal activities. Monitor the puncture site for any bruising or discomfort.

About This Test

Who Should Get This Test

The Hemophilia Panel Test is designed to diagnose hemophilia by measuring the activity levels of clotting factors VIII and IX, and to determine the severity of the disease. It also includes APTT testing to assess overall clotting function.

How to Prepare

  • Use 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube
  • Mix thoroughly by inversion

Understanding Your Results

Results from the Hemophilia Panel Test indicate the levels of clotting factors VIII and IX. Low levels suggest hemophilia, with severity based on activity percentages.
📊

Severe hemophilia, high risk of spontaneous bleeding

📊

Moderate hemophilia, bleeding after minor trauma

📊

Mild hemophilia, bleeding mainly after surgery or injury

📊

Normal levels, no hemophilia indicated

📊

Possible other coagulation disorders, further testing needed

⚠️ When to Consult a Doctor:

Consult a doctor if you experience persistent unexplained bleeding, joint swelling, or if test results indicate abnormal clotting factor levels. Early intervention can prevent complications.

Limitations

  • Does not test for all clotting factors (e.g., XI, XII)
  • May not detect mild carriers in females
  • Results can be affected by sample storage and transport
  • Not suitable for diagnosing acquired bleeding disorders

Risks & Considerations

  • Minor pain or bruising at the puncture site
  • Rare risk of infection or fainting
  • Minimal bleeding in individuals with bleeding disorders

Interfering Factors

  • Heparin therapy
  • Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
  • Recent blood transfusion
  • Liver disease
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Sample hemolysis or improper handling
